Weekly Photo Challenge – Pattern

Batik web copy

Batik is a method of dying fabrics and sometimes paper in which some areas are covered with wax, glues, or specially made products to keep dyes from penetrating the fabric.

Typically the wax or other product is laid down in a pattern and then the paint is applied and allowed to dry. The wax is then removed. The area under the wax keeps its original color with an occasional line of color giving it a somewhat crackled look.

Batik is originated in Java, Indonesia.

It is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there. The word batik originates from the Javanese tik and means to dot.

    • hahaha … I have a feeling that love of Batiks comes from the 60’s hippy days. I remember being into natural fabrics that were hand dyed. The patterns were always similar with color variations. Thhey were usually handmade and from other countries. The mystery of the fabirc made it enticing. Almost everyone I know that is my age loves Batik. It must be for that reason. Food for thought …. right?

      • I’m making little shopping bags for an arts fair in July. I’ll be selling my books and thought that quilted bags would be a nice thing to have for sale as well.

Right now I have 3 of my quilt art pieces in a juried fabric art show. The opening is this Friday. I submitted 3 and all were accepted!

        • YAY … congrats on being selected for displaying you artful quilts. I like the idea of selling them along with your book. There are many people who go to the librbay with bags to carry their books. besides it shows another side of you. If you are ever interested in getting an on-line shop started let me know and I can guide you through. We need artful fabric artist. They are becoming scarce.
GOOD LUCK witht he book sales. I will pray and light a white candle for much success.
          Namaste …
          Issy xoxo
